In 1996 The Rotary Club of Jersey City left its regular meeting place for a
one day special event at the
Culinary
Arts Institute of the Hudson County Community
College (HCCC). The event coupled great food with great wine but most
importantly it began a tradition which has led to benefits for a number of
deserving mature students attending the Institute.
Rotarian Adele Miller, in conjunction with Rotarian Glen Gabert, President of
HCCC, initiated the idea of having the club travel to the Institute to get a
better idea of just what our community college was all about. Not only did
it make the members aware of this jewel in the crown of Hudson County, but it
got them interested in helping mature students who might be making a career
change or reentering the workforce after an interruption brought about by taking
time out to raise a family.
The following year, 1997, the club returned to the Institute for the now
annual luncheon and wine tasting and brought along a check made out to the
Hudson County Community College Foundation to provide a scholarship. Each
year since, this wonderful tradition has continued and its growth has only been
impeded by the limited size of the facility. In the near future, the
College will break ground for a new culinary facility with a larger dining area,
and the Rotarians eagerly look forward to the opportunity to be among the first
to avail themselves of its expanded capabilities.
